FACT FILE One of three species of bird, genus Nycticorax , family Ardeidae, order Ciconiiformes, of very wide distribution. They are most active at night and feed on fish and amphibians. The black-crowned night heron N. nycticorax is about 60 cm/24 in long. The top of its head and its back are black, its wings are black and grey and its breast is pale grey or white. The other species are the yellow-crowned night heron N. violaceus and the rufous night heron N. caledonicus . Click here to see the video
